"My son's dignity was stripped away"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was brought into ED. He suffers with MS, is immobile and bed bound, reliant on two people to assist for full care as he has no use of his upper or lower limbs. He was left on a hard trolley with sides down falling off the bed, left with no water for 24hrs in scorching heat, left in soaking wet urine pad for 24hrs and not washed. Spoke to staff who advised they thought he was independent, which I found incredible as he needs two staff for full care. This was Hairmyres emergency department, no care, compassion or communication, my son's dignity was stripped away and I would not like this to happen to anyone else.

Dear filinghk33

Thank you for contacting and sharing your concerns regarding the care your son received whilst in the emergency department. This is clearly not the standard of care that I would expect and for that I offer sincere apologies.

I would like to look into this as soon as possible and therefore ask you to contact me directly so that I can personally look into your son’s care delivery and feedback to you both.

I would be grateful if you could contact me on either

01355 584725 or email Lise.axford@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Dear filinghk33

Thank you for getting in touch to discuss the care your son received in the emergency department. The Senior charge nurse has had the opportunity to meet with you and discuss the concerns that you have raised. Thank you for taking the time to meet with her as your feedback is important so we can learn and drive improvement.

The senior charge nurse is continuing to review your son’s care and work with staff involved. We will link in with again to update you.

Thank you again for your time
