"experience was awful"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Endoscopy Unit The Ulster Hospital / Ward 6B

(as a service user),

I was admitted for a procedure which was planned and organised by my consultant due to my individual circumstances.

The whole experience in this ward was awful, when I explained my situation and fears, I was dismissed and told that a child could do this.

When I cried and got distressed I was told to calm down.

I don’t want to go into my personal situation but how people present is not their whole story.

The procedure I needed was due to some months of a back story which had been distressing.

The attitude of some of the staff was wholly inappropriate and was not what I expected from the caring profession.

Perhaps a reminder of individual needs of all patients especially those with additional circumstances is a training need. I wonder if staffing is an issue on the ward or if an unhealthy culture has developed.

I had to proceed from the ward to another procedure which became an issue which was shared with me. I had to beg to be discharged so I could attend my next appointment.

I left the ward to attend my appointment 15 minutes later.

I was then told that I was an inpatient so couldn’t have procedure until I was discharged.

I then had to return to the ward on numerous occasions to ask for discharge.

It became quite childish as someone from day procedure had to go to the ward and demand my discharge.

It was then requested that I sit on-my bed to wait on a dr to come and discharge me. This did not happen and eventually the nurse in charge of my care  shouted into the room “ I am discharging you now”

This may seem trivial on my part but due to side effects of medication I have a build up of fluid on my legs and a skin rash that is extraordinarily itchy so walking isn’t easy and becoming hot flares up the rash. I had to go from one part of the hospital to another 4 times.

When I eventually ( 2 hrs following my appointment time ) checked in to the colonoscopy unit - they were lovely and really compassionate. For the first time in 3 days I felt safe.

violetnw38,

First of all let me say how sorry I am to hear of the awful experience you had, however it is comforting to know that when you were in the Endoscopy unit the staff made you feel safe.

I hope you are now keeping well since your procedure.

Take care.

Jemma Gillespie - Endoscopy Lead Nurse

violetnw38,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

I apologise for your inpatient experience, this is not the standard of care we strive for on 6B. On reading your experience I can surmise this is an isolated case. We pride ourselves as a ward in the professional care we deliver on Ward 6B.

It is difficult to respond to your experience not knowing the details of your case. I would like to offer an individual review/meeting with yourself and am happy to be contacted or arrange a meeting to address the issues raised.

best wishes

Erin Rosson -Ward Manager
