"Terrible service at Newry A&E"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

We phoned first at 7.30pm with severe pains in chest. Arrived at A&E at 8pm. 2am still had not received our results from bloods or ECG. The staff kept calling out names that were not in the waiting room. Everyone was getting beyond fed up as we waited hours for just one person at a time to be called. Eventually the others in the room even began to clap when a person was called. I think the ladies on the counter covering the screens should have by that point had to take a list of names who were actually left in the waiting room. (Less than 10 people)  Or we should have been advised about the average waiting time.

Hi sdo94

I am very sorry to hearing about your negative experience of the waiting time at DHH ED. Patient presenting to ED are triaged and allocated a priority as per their presenting complaint. The waiting time to be seen and assessed by an ED Doctor are significantly delayed due to reduced capacity within the department due to patients waiting longer to be admitted to an in-patient ward. Recently the SHSCT changed to Encompass and online system for documentation this has also have a impact on the waiting times due to all staff learning how to navigate the new system.

When patients leave we do encourage them to let the ED reception staff know so that the system can be updated. I am unsure if this is what happened during the time which you were in the ED.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience and I hope you are recovering following your recent illness.

Stacey
