"Inadequate parking"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley)

(as a service user),

I was called to the hospital in the afternoon as my wife had deteriorated and they thought that she was approaching the end of her life. I could not get parked in the main car park as it was full. It was visiting time at the hospital. I could not find another parking space so had to park half on a painted space beside a disabled space and partially on a pavement. It was down a hill from the main car park. The pavement was not blocked. A wheelchair could reasonably get past on the pavement.

I stayed with my wife and she passed away in the early hours of the morning. I returned to my car. The car park was empty. I was distraught at having lost my wife and when I got to the car I realised I had been given a parking ticket on my windscreen. Additionally the parking attendants had put three A5 stickers on my car windows/mirrors. One was on my driver's wing mirror obscuring the view, one was on the driver's window, so I couldn't see the wing mirror, and one was on my back window. I had to stand in the early hours and remove the stickers so I could drive home.

After the distress of losing my wife, I could not believe that the parking attendants had made it dangerous for me to drive home, as the griminess of the large stickers had left such a tacky, gummy residue I wouldn't see out my driver wing mirror.

I understand the need for rules regarding parking around the hospital, but perhaps given that there is inadequate parking for staff, patients and their families a bit of grace wouldn't go a miss. Especially as no one parks in an inappropriate space unless they are desperate.

Dear Squatkh66

My sincere condolences for the loss of your wife.

It is concerning that the placement of parking enforcement stickers impacted your ability to drive safely at such an emotional and vulnerable time. This will be discussed with the Car Parking Management Company to ensure this does not happen again.

If you can send picture of your ticket to: ggc.patientexperience@nhs.scot I will arrange for this ticket to be cancelled.

Please accept my apologies for the added distress at such a difficult time.

Thank you

Nicole
