"My son got knocked over by a car"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

I got the phone call that no parent wants to get: your child has been knocked down by a car. When I arrived he was lying in the middle of the road with 2 paramedics. Those paramedics were amazing. I am sure they were Connor and Nick. The way that they dealt with my son was outstanding. They kept talking to him, explaining what they were doing and why, kept him and me calm. I cannot thank them enough for what they did. Even explaining why he needed to be blue lighted etc. They are a credit to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

When were then taken to A&E at the Victoria in Kirkcaldy, where we were met with the trauma team. They were all excellent but one nurse stands out. Matt was absolutely amazing with my son. I cannot thank him enough. He was explaining everything to my son of what was happening but in a way that a 9-year-old could understand. He was with him when he had to get X-rays and a CT scan. He kept me and my husband calm. He stayed with my son all the time he was in A&E and wheeled him round to the paediatric ward and stayed with him to make sure he was ok. Matt is a credit to the nursing staff and outstanding A&E nurse. I cannot thank these people enough for what they have done for my son.

Luckily my son is ok albeit with a sore head and a sore face.

Sorry to hear of the traumatic incident when your son was hit by a car, but thanks for taking the time to give this exceptional feedback. I am glad the paramedics were able to put your son at ease and I will ensure you comments are passed on to Matt, who is an extremely efficient and caring nurse and also a dad of boys, so would have an appreciation of how you would feel.

I hope your son is on the mend and recovered from the trauma.

Esther

Dear Amy372

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was sorry to hear that your son was involved in an accident. It must have been terrifying to receive that phone call.

As part of the Scottish Trauma Network, the Scottish Ambulance Service has put a lot of work into how we care for patients who have been injured in accidents. This has included working closely with hospitals such Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy to ensure a joined up approach. I am pleased to hear that this has worked for your son but also pleased to hear about the care provided by the Paramedics, particularly the way they spoke to your son and the way they kept you informed.

I am so glad to hear that your son is on the mend and on behalf of the ambulance service, please pass on my best wishes to him.

It would be good to pass on your feedback to the Connor and Nick but to do so I would need a bit more information so that I could confirm who it was that treated your son. If you are able to, you can email me at martin.esposito@nhs.scot

Thanks again for sharing.

Martin.
