"Mother’s dementia"

About: Specialist Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Services / The Admiral Nurses Herefordshire

(as a relative),

Following the sudden death of dad in April 2023, mother requires substantial support at home. Her level of dementia was also more evident to witness, together with her reliance upon family and carers. This has impacted more on me (daughter) and my husband as we live nearby. Consequently I tend to visit mom up to 4 times per day in addition to the carers' visits. Our life revolves around caring for mom and supporting her needs including medication, grocery shopping, medical appointments, providing meals, laundry, housework, etc., which together with supporting our own family life with children and grandchildren, creates a tiring, busy, tense  and stressful life for me and my husband.

At mother’s routine GP appointment in September 2023, the Admiral Nurse service was introduced and, following referral, we attended a consultation with Admiral Nurse Nikki in October 2023. Since then we have been meeting monthly at our home. At these hour long home visits, Nikki has offered support services and opportunities and provided advice. She has listened carefully and fully understands the impact of dementia on family carers, demonstrating empathy and guidance.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide feedback for the Admiral Nursing Service. It sounds as though you have had a very difficult time and that you are doing so well do juggle the responsibilities of your caring role with everything else that life demands. It is so lovely to hear that Nikki has been able to support you through this time and has had a positive impact on your experience. Nikki will be able to view what you have written and I am certain that she will be really touched by your kind words.

Thank you again. 🪷
