"An ok stay"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Ninewells Hospital / Neonatology

(as a service user),

I happened to stay twice on ward 38 north and south after having my baby. The care was great from the midwives who came and saw me and helped with my pain. The care was not so great when I was left in pain and did not receive my scheduled analgesia at the time it was supposed to be given. I understand that a postnatal ward can be very busy and there is a pressure on staff but to not receive analgesia until 2 hours after asking wasn’t great when recovering from a section.

On my second stay I did not see a midwife for a whole day when we were admitted for my baby on the second day to get jaundice treatment. I was very emotional and upset. I was getting my room cleaned and the member of staff cleaning it was giving me comfort and I will always be grateful for them. They were the only person on that ward to comfort me that day.

I will say that having a side room felt like I was forgotten about. The facilities of the room itself is dated and doesn’t make you feel better either. My partner said to me you’d get a better room in a prison. The room was not dirty however the paint patches missing, broken tv stands on the wall, toilet holders broken, broken blinds etc doesn’t make you feel like it was clean and comfortable. The most modern part of the ward was the bathrooms on the main ward!!

Although this may seem rather negative, I cannot fault the midwives and health care assistants who looked after me before, during, after and the night shift of my section! The midwives who cared for me were saints and I will always be grateful for them! When we got readmitted for my baby the care we received for him was incredible and the neonatal staff are a credit to Ninewells and genuinely the most loveliest and caring people I have ever met and again will always be grateful for them.
