I was under CAMHS as a teenager for ADHD symptoms however was never medicated as it wasn’t something I wanted to do. Instead I underwent CBT.
Fast forward to now and my life is a daily struggle, maintaining relationships, keeping employment and most recently dropping out of university due to my symptoms.
I contacted my GP a year ago after another crisis episode but was informed that NHS Lanarkshire were not accepting new referrals into the ADHD assessments. I explained I had been referred in 2019/2020 however had not heard anything from the mental health services. I was informed a new referral would be needed however they would not be able to do this as they were not allowed to do any referrals at present.
I enquired about going private and then accessing shared care however was told again that NHS Lanarkshire would not accept shared care. This was very disappointing as I knew that other health boards were infact accepting shared cared if the diagnosis criteria were met.
So in short, they won’t offer a service and support ongoing treatment if required. What other health conditions does the NHS refuse to treat? Well none really?
Anyway after paying a lot of money to get an official diagnosis and beginning treatment, my life significantly improved to the point I was able to almost live a “normal” life (however that looks to most).
However alas unfortunately money became a problem to maintain the ongoing costs. I could no longer afford the private medication reviews and prescription costs. I have now found myself once again unmedicated and my life is significantly deteriorated as a result. I have now dropped out of university which I was doing very well in when medicated but can no longer sustain. I feel so let down by the NHS and don’t know what to do or where to seek help as none is available now without cost implications.
I don’t understand why support and services for ADHD seems to be nonexistent with Nhs Lanarkshire. Again what other condition would you be told that you either need to be facing police action or wanting to end your life, before help is offered?
