"My son's experience with support from psychology"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatric Clinical Psychology

(as a parent/guardian),

My teenage son was referred to the psychology department through the IBD team when he was really struggling with his diagnosis of Crohn's and all that was  expected of him, camera tests, scopes, blood samples and some kind of medication initially tablets then possibly medication that had to be administered by a needle. Panic modes set in, anger, upset and fight or flight episodes with him running out of the ward and being terrified. As a mum to watch this it was awful.

He was introduced to Emily, a clinical psychologist who showed kindness  patience, listened to him (when he wanted to speak)  and was very calm and understanding. She really  acknowledged his feelings and was there for him.

Over the last few years she has given strategies and support to not only my son but me too. I remember her saying when things were really hard that one day he will walk in here and get his bloods and injections done easier as it will become part of his routine. I remember thinking, really!  But wow she was so right and now he gets both of these done with confidence and he uses suggestions she had given such as music and breathing.

He is like a different child now and I honestly can't thank Emily enough for her valuable input, support. knowledge, kindness, understanding and patience she has shown to us both.  She always had his interests as the main focus and championed him to nurses, doctors and family.  She really believed in him and has given him the inner confidence to believe in himself. She really got it right for him. I can't thank you enough, Emily. I would highly recommend her to anyone else whose child is finding things tough as she has been like our guardian angel.

Dear Jo-Anne

Thank you for such lovely feedback. I have passed on your message to Emily. I am so pleased that Emily was able to have such a positive impact on yourself and your son and how amazing that he is now able to feel confident to get his bloods and injections done using the strategies he has learned. He has clearly worked very hard with Emily to achieve that.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and to thank Emily for her input.

I wish you and your son all the best.

Take care.

Janie
