"Hospital gowns lack dignity"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

A recent appointment for a x-ray left me feeling undignified.  As I was getting a knee x-ray staff requested I change into a hospital gown. The hospital gown was small and did not fully cover my body. I am a uk size 20, not an uncommon size here in Fermanagh.  I asked the student radiologist for a larger gown, and although he went to look there was none available.  As such I had to walk from changing area to x-ray room, where 4 staff entered the viewing area talking and watching the student.  I do not feel that the Trust are taking adequate action to ensure patients dignity is respected when required to wear gowns for procedures.  The student who undertook my x-rays was reassuring and professional, this issue lies with provision of adequate gowns to meet the needs of each patient.

Dear GC2BE, I am sorry to hear that you were left feeling undignified when you attended for x-ray. Thank you for highlighting the inadequate supply of hospital gowns. We have now reviewed this and in the future hope to be able to provide patients with a more suitably sized gown when they have to get changed for a xray or scan. It is pleasing to hear and thank you again for highlighting the good work of the Radiography student looking after you. I have made staff aware of your experience in the hope that this will not reoccur in the future.
