We had to attend the fetal medicine unit when several complications were identified in my pregnancy. The staff were all extremely friendly and compassionate from the moment we walked in the door. We were involved in all decisions and our questions were answered so that we could understand. When we needed further clarification on something we were able to phone and get a review appointment with our specialists the following week. Often the consultants were running late for appointments if the appointment was at a later clinic time but that really is the nature of the fetal medicine unit - I would rather they take the time to explain and provide support when giving bad news than rush you out the door to be on time for the next appointment. Sadly problems in our pregnancy did result in our daughter being stillborn, but the staff at the FMU did make a horrible experience so much more manageable by treating us with dignity, compassion and respect, and understanding that we didn't lose a pregnancy but a very special daughter. We are now pregnant again and the FMU have been providing us with excellent care and monitoring throughout.
