"Ridiculous waiting"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My 4-month-old had an eczema rash on his front that spread on to his legs. The paramedics that came to see us at home insisted that we should go to A&E.

We (me, my partner and our son) got to A&E at 11.40pm. It did not take long for us to be seen by a nurse who looked over my son and told us to wait in the waiting room to see a doctor. After waiting for 3 and a half hours I asked the member of staff on reception what the update was on us seeing the doctor.

The member of staff on reception casually told me that its probably going to be a 7-hour wait. I'd understand if the hospital was rammed packed full of patients but it wasn't throughout our time of visiting. One patient literally went to sleep laying across different seats and there was space for them to change seats to sleep across.

Mind you, this is for a 4-month-old baby who's been made to sit in a car seat, babies of his age are advised to be only in said car seats for an hour at a time. Seeing that we had been in the waiting room for as long as we had we got hungry and thirsty. The vending machines wouldn't take card and we didn't think we'd be able to go to a cash machine. I eventually got sick of waiting and went for a walk to the nearby petrol station where I drew out some money and from there bought myself and my partner some food and drink.

I actually thought that on my way back that it would have been typical that my son and partner got called in by the doctor but no that would have been wishful thinking. I am beyond angry with the shoddy treatment that my 4-month-son received at your hands. If it's going to take that long to see to a 4-month-old baby then it genuinely has me worried for how long it would take for me to be seen in A&E or an old person.

At the time of writing this, me and my partner are considering going home and just seeing our GP first thing in the morning. At least we'd probably get seen to properly.

Dear marsfn79,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear of the long wait you experienced when attending A&E with your little one. I can only imagine how frustrating this must have been for you and as the parent of a poorly child it must have been quite worrying.

Our emergency departments are under immense pressures at the moment but the staff do try to see patients as quickly as possible. If you wish to discuss this further, please contact our patient affairs team who can take further details and provide a personal response.

I hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
