I arrived at Asha Centre feeling hopeless and ashamed. I was met by a staff member who was quietly spoken and instantly made me feel at ease. The environment was warm and welcoming and my room comfortable.
I suppose quite normally my mood was very low over my first week and I was very tearful, nonetheless I felt safe and cared for. As I began to physically feel better, I began to think more clearly and absorb the information / education provided in the groups. I got a lot out of the groups, and whilst confronting at times, I believe the gentle challenging helped me to really reflect on the pain I was causing to not only myself but others. The staff re-enforced clear daily procedures and structures which was helpful. Alongside the hard work was encouragement and humour.I appreciate each and every staff member who supported me in some way. It was evident that the team were dedicated and work tirelessly to meet not only my needs but other patients.I am leaving Asha with hope in my heart and resolve that if I do what was advised, and the sign posts provided I can arrest my alcoholism on a 24 hour basis. One suggestion would be offering yoga to run alongside meditation. Unfortunately the TV was broken (it happens) and my focus wasn't great to read, so there were long periods where a little boredom set in. This is not a criticism, just an observation, as my bed in Asha felt like the golden ticket to beginning my recovery. Again, thank you so much. I plan to attend your ex patients group, when i have some sober time.
