"Hysteroscopy with polyp removal"

About: Gynaecology / Gynaecology Outpatients

(as the patient),

I was referred after a polyp was seen in my uterus during a scan to get to the bottom of ongoing continuous bleeding. I was quite nervous going in but everyone from the receptionist to the doctor was so lovely and friendly they put me at ease.

The pain was worse than I was expecting but I had opted to try without local aesthetic at first. The doctor kept checking with me to see how my pain levels were and when I said they were too much, she stopped and we went for a local aesthetic before continuing which was so much better! I felt involved and included all the way through the process. I was listened to and supported and the women couldn't have been nicer! Even after we were done, they popped me into a room by myself, brought me tea and biscuits and I never felt rushed or in the way.

I would recommend opting for the local aesthetic off the bat unless there's a genuine reason not to - it would have saved me so much discomfort. The actual procedure only took about 30 minutes in total but it didn't feel rushed - everything was at my pace. Overall, I hope I won't have to have another one, but I'm no longer anxious at the thought of it.

As for recovery time - I took the day off work and I think that was sensible - after the anaesthetic wore off, I had period like cramps that were quite strong even after taking pain relief. It wouldn't have been a fun day at work, even at an office job.

Dear falconrr66

Firstly, I hope you are now completely recovered from your hysteroscopy last week.

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch to tell us about your experience. It is most gratifying when patients share their journey, as this lets the staff know that the person-centred approach which we strive to meet is working.

It is also very helpful for anyone who is about to attend an appointment like yours to be able to read about what to expect.

I will make sure that the whole team are able to read your post, and thank you again for writing.

Best wishes

Kirsteen
