"Turned away"

About: Sexual Health Services - North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (Open Clinic)

(as a service user),

I have been experiencing worsening symptoms of infection since having my baby and a canestest indicated BV or trichomoniasis and GP advised swabs before prescribing the appropriate treatment. Attended the clinic for the walk in service and had my baby with me as I'm exclusively breastfeeding, and my partner and family work full time so unable to come with me.

Filled in the forms and returned them to reception. Waited an hour to be triaged and was told they are unable to do swabs incase I fainted and no one was there to look after baby. Told to buy an OTC treatment.

I knew myself that I would not faint as I've been through a lot worse and never lost consciousness. Even if I did faint, its not like baby is going to suddenly gain the ability to jump out of the pram and cause havoc. There was no point in challenging this as it seemed to be some sort of clinic policy, which I can understand and appreciate if it is policy.

What I can't understand is that surely this should be something that is signposted upon arrival rather than having to wait an hour to be turned away? The form filled out and handed to reception showed that I was visiting for genital problems, so surely that would indicate that I was going to need swabs and it would have made sense to advise straight away that I may not be seen due to this?

Since then I made an appointment with the GP practice nurse, baby was present, swabs were taken and now awaiting results so that I can get the appropriate treatment.

Dear venusfp78,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your experience when accessing our service. We wish to learn from feedback our service users share, and I would appreciate speaking with you further about this. If you could email leanne.folwer@mpft.nhs.uk that would be useful. I am sorry to read that your experience was frustrating and would like to assure we risk assess each patient to ensure safety with procedures.

Kind regards
