"They were so quick and efficient in how they worked"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a service user),

When my baby girl was born she had a stay in the NICU due to breathing issues. 2 weeks after discharge she was showing laboured breathing under her rib cage. Advised to attend A&E. Care was exemplary for the minute we walked in, the receptionist was very efficient in how quickly she took details and advised us to go straight through to be checked by a nurse/doctor. The first nurse we seen was a blonde lady in navy scrubs (feel awful I didn’t get her name!) who was so caring and made me feel so at ease when I was worrying.

We were so quickly triaged by Rachel who was again brilliant with my daughter doing observations and put me at ease. She then spoke directly to the doctor (I think his name was Patrick?) who assessed my daughter and was so thorough, he asked for a consult from the paediatric doctor. This was Laura who we had seen previously in the NICU, she was so knowledgable and explained everything in great detail.

We were cleared to go home and again Rachel came back to do observations before we left, she was so kind telling me about parking, offering to carry out bags to car if needed and reminded me if I was worried at all to come back in.

I cannot thank the staff enough, they were so quick and efficient in how they worked. It is clearly a very busy environment and it is clear to see they are overworked but are putting in a great deal of effort to ensure patients are seen promptly.

The care was first class and I even heard Rachel asking the doctor who initially assessed my daughter how she was after he had initially seen her. Clearly they are devoted to their job and very good at it. Thank you!
