"Mater Hospital Belfast - where everyone takes the Initiative!"

About: Mater Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

I was sent to the Mater by my GP with suspected sepsis. On arrival at A&E got a blood test which confirmed serious cellulitis. IV antibiotics started and fluids administered in A&E.

Very busy, very courteous and very caring nurse arranged a bed and allowed my exhausted wife home. Witnessed doctors and nurses working tirelessly and on their feet, without break for hours. As another patient told them -  you’re  angels!. One patient was difficult and abusive - they were completely professional and  caring for him - without judgement.

Next day I was boarded in a ward- ie a bed in corridor - where I had excellent care - additional work and above capacity  for Ward Staff. I wouldn’t have known!

Each nurse coming on duty introduced themselves by first name and told me that they were looking after me on that shift. I felt very well looked after and never an additional load on the dedicated staff! Like the rest of us - they have their problems and worries - but they spare them selves nothing in the care of their very many patients.

We keep hearing that the NHS is broken. Less than 4 days after leaving hospital being treated for a very serious infection I was able to attend a dear niece’s wedding in England. Thank-you - Mater Staff!

From what I could see Hospital staff were working way above their duty. Nurses having to stay for over an hour after their shift ends. They won’t abandon their  patients! A doctor responsible for 100 patients on a Sunday!  If we don’t start to appreciate our NHS staff and provide enough posts  - We’ll break them! It will then be a Humpty Dumpty!

What a tragedy!

Dear Paul Damien

My name is Bernie Carey and I am a senior manager at the Mater Hospital site. Thank you for your very positive feedback and thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience. We are very grateful to you.. The staff love to hear positive feedback from our patients and that they have provided a safe and successful care

You have informed us the staff were professional and caring and it sounds like you felt safe and supported and that you were well looked after by all of our staff. I will pass on this positive post to all the staff both in ED and on the wards.

I am not sure which ward you were on but this is just lovely to read and I will share with staff.

Hope you enjoyed your nieces wedding and that you continue to keep well.

Take care and thanks again

Bernie

Hi Paul

Thanks so much or taking the time to share your positive experience while in the Emergency Department and also the main hospital.

I will ensure that your kind words are passed on to all staff who endeavour to ensure high standards of care on a daily basis.

It will be lovely for the staff to hear they have made a difference to you and I hope you continue to improve and are feeling a lot better.

Bernie Hillen

Update posted by PaulDamien (a service user)

Thanks to both Bernies - Sorry that I forgot to also say that I had expert care from everyone in the Mater.

I was in Ward E this time. In 2022 I was also treated in the Mater for cellulitis in different wards and got the same expert and compassionate care. It’s obviously part of your culture! My sincere thanks to everyone.
