"Emergency and further treatment"

About: Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency Causeway Hospital / Day Procedure Unit Causeway Hospital / Respiratory Physiology Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as the patient),

Alone and at home some weeks ago I realised I was having real difficulty breathing and my symptoms were getting worse. I phoned 999. Immediate response. Operator stayed on line and the ambulance arrived in 15 minutes. The team worked professionally to relieve the symptoms and proceeded to take me to Causeway A&E.

I was seen by Dr Maguire whose professional attention I greatly appreciated and admired. He was thorough, kind and non-condescending. Following x-ray I was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Following on I was referred to the Respiratory Consultant, Mr. Cannie.

He explained to me in a direct, kindly way that he needed to proceed with a more intrusive procedure which was carried out in the Day Procedure Unit where I received the best of medical attention in the theatre and resting area.

More tests followed. I was seen on time, the staff were professional, the waiting areas were clean, comfortable and not overcrowded.

My last consultation was with Mr Canny who, in a most professional though kindly and direct way, explained the results of his investigation: cancer with possibly four months.

He introduced me to a Macmillan Lung and Cancer Nurse Specialist, a key worker, who can be contacted by phone.

I cannot speak more highly of the care  I have received from Causeway Hospital.....Efficient and caring.

Since my diagnosis I have been contacted and visited by members of support and care teams whose services are there for me when I need them.

It has all been reassuring.
