About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Theatres Craigavon Area Hospital / Trauma Ward

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the Trauma ward for OFIR surgery, the staff were very approachable, kind, and put my nerves at ease before surgery. The Consultant was very friendly and carefully explained the procedure. The surgical team were all excellent.

My experience after surgery was less positive, after staying the night the doctor that visited me in the morning was blunt and a little too candid in how they explained my injury, or at least how to consult had described it. I won’t repeat what was said but somethings are best kept between medical professionals, and articulated better to the patient.

Undergoing surgery and a stay in hospital is stressful for most, but as someone who has struggled with an anxiety disorder for most of my life it was particularly difficult to be spoken to with so little consideration. I didn’t imagine I’d be leaving the ward more anxious than I arrived, especially considering how excellent the rest of the staff were up until that point.

Hello,

My name is Rachel and I am the Ward Sister on the Trauma Ward. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. It is important to myself and the staff to understand how patients feel throughout their time with us and to hear of their experiences. I am pleased to hear that the staff prior to your surgery were kind and approachable and made you feel informed of your procedure. I will be sure to pass this on to all the staff.

However, I am sorry to read that your experience following your surgery was disappointing and I apologise for how the Doctor made you feel. I can appreciate a hospital stay and surgery is a daunting time and I am sorry you left feeling more anxious. We strive to ensure patients feel comfortable throughout admission and receive the best possible care. It has been shared with all staff to be mindful of how they communicate with patients.

I wish you well and a speedy recovery.

Best wishes,

Rachel
