"Given us back a little normality"

About: Adult Health Services / Physiotherapy

(as a relative),

I am writing our experience on the care received and given to my husband after his discharge from hospital back in January 2025. My husband was admitted to hospital suffering from a serious spinal illness. This condition led to leaving him with no mobility at all, not even being able to stand up. This was a huge blow to us (wife). The impact on us both was devastating. Therefore within a week I found myself to be completely helpless & alone in coping & adapting to my husband's needs.

A hospital bed was delivered and put in place in the living room for him as stairs were not an option for going up to bed, also a Sarasteady and gutter zimmer for moving my husband from chair to bed and back again in the morning. The feeling of complete isolation was overwhelming .....until the arrival of a physiotherapist & OT (Nikki & Lorraine) who were allocated to assist my husband in as much as possible to regain some mobility in his life.

Now i will be perfectly honest here & say that my belief in even getting my Husband to stand up was very low!! But to give these two ladies the title of angels is an understatement! The dedication and care they both gave to us was incredible. Faithfully they worked on my husband's rehab, slow but sure, with the results being he is now able to stand up with the aids of his walking sticks & myself beside him and walk a very short distance to the toilet with myself by his side guiding him and with privacy & dignity. It is truly remarkable and would never have been achieved without their expertise. We are both fully aware that this is as much as he will ever be able to manage regarding mobility & personal care which we receive from the carers as he cannot dress or wash himself, but that in itself has given us back a little of normality to our lives.

Our heartfelt thanks & praise know no bounds. I sincerely hope that the health & care services continues for many more years helping others as they have helped us both physically & mentally.
