"Assessment then treatment for Parkinson’s Disease, arthritic hip and knee joints."

About: Havant Health Centre Petersfield Hospital Portsmouth and South East Division / Community Therapies – Havant, Hayling and Waterlooville St Mary's Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

After caring for my wife for just over 25 years I was able to seek some guidance for issues that impacted on my own health.

These became apparent with tremors in my right arm and some difficulty when walking. Fortunately these only arose during the last two years.

After consultation with my GP I was referred to the Parkinson’s specialist team in Petersfield and to the hip team at St. Mary’s Hospital in Portsmouth.

Started a course of treatment for Parkinson’s and referred to the physiotherapy team in Havant for assessment and guidance on suitable exercises.

The hip specialist at St. Mary’s suggested that my hip be replaced but that was deferred as I was also looking after my Mother In Law at that time.

Attending a Parkinson’s review clinic from time to time and physiotherapy classes at Waterlooville Leisure Centre on a weekly basis.

These group physiotherapy sessions are arranged carefully having due regard to the mix of people attending and their conditions/ailments.

Gentle introduction to each session and cooling down periods maintained.

More strenuous activities completed during the middle of the sessions but again careful consideration given to those attending and their abilities.

Careful instructions given in a friendly manner.

A variety of activities undertaken in order to help with leg and arm mobility and strength though there are certain core elements completed each week.

Participants are encouraged to spend time at home undertaking some of these exercises - at least three sessions a week if possible.

Clear instructions given before each activity started supported by a demonstration of the actual activity.

Guidance given in an encouraging and friendly manner while making sure that participants do not over exert themselves and remain safe in this environment.

Lead physiotherapist was Michelle.
