"My son's surgery"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Day Case unit Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My little boy recently had surgery to remove his tonsils and adenoids. The staff from start to finish that we met were absolutely amazing. They treated us both with respect and complete understanding.

They were great in preparing my son for surgery and in his care afterwards. In particular, two nurses at the day case unit, Natalie and Rhianna were amazing. They were gentle, kind and reassuring.

Patrick, the Anaesthetist, helped keep my son calm and also enjoyed a bit of a laugh which made us all smile. He was also very attentive to my son before and after surgery and explained everything clearly to me. Our surgeon, Mr Zygan visited before surgery and after explaining what would happen very clearly which was much appreciated.

After surgery my son received great care, however it was noticed and noted in his notes that he had a small graze or burn on the side of his mouth. This in my opinion was quite quickly dismissed and I feel like I wasn't entirely taken seriously about it. It has been causing my son quite a lot of pain and I was given no advice on how to care for it to ensure it also healed properly post surgery. This is something I'm fairly convinced happened that should not have happened and no one seemed to want to have a conversation with me about it. This has been disappointing and concerning in an overall positive experience.

Coordinate the smooth running of orthopaedic surgical lists in a busy Day case Unit delegating staff to ensure the care given to patients is of the highest possible standards.

Hi dancebp46, First of all,I Hope your Son is recovering well from his surgery. I would like to thank you for taking the time to post a very positive feedback for the staff involved,. Our staff are very passionate in their role and work at a professional level to ensure the highest standards of care is delivered to the patients, however I am sorry to hear that your wee boy has suffered a burn/Graze on the side of his mouth unfortunately this can happen with the nature of the surgery,I am sorry your concerns were dismissed by staff. No parent should feel dismissed or unheard regarding their Childs Care. I can only advise you if you feel it would help to ring into The day Case Unit and ask to speak to the Manager in charge I will ensure that your concerns will be fed back to the relevant staff. Alternatively you have the option of speaking to the Surgeons Secretary and inquire when the review is and ask to speak to the surgeon directly. Meanwhile I will feedback to all regarding your kind words and also your concerns. I Hope you are provided with the answers to your questions and that you can gain comfort from any conversation that you have regarding this.

Thanking you kindly
