"The kindness and compassion of the staff was amazing"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department The Ulster Hospital / Ward 3A

(as a service user),

I recently had to visit A&E feeling extremely unwell with what turned out to be pneumonia and sepsis. A&E was extremely busy and the staff were stretched and space was limited. However, despite this I was treated with such care and compassion at a time when I was feeling very frightened due to feeling so ill.

Immediately after triage I was given fluids, IV paracetamol and anti sickness medication. Within 4 hours I had been started in antibiotics. Within 6 hours I had had both a chest x-ray and CT scan and within 8 hours I had a bed on a ward.  Having heard stories of how long waits are in A&E, I had expected to wait much longer for tests and admission to a ward.

I stayed on ward 3A for 8 nights. Initially in a corridor bed and then after 2 nights in a room. Again the kindness and compassion of the staff was amazing. Despite feeling so poorly, I felt safe in the care of ward 3A. Everyone from support staff to nurses and doctors were lovely and despite the ward being very busy nothing ever seemed to be too much trouble.

I want to say a huge thank you to all the staff in A&E and ward 3A. I am home feeling much better but I will never forget their care and kindness.

Hi Lilibet94

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your experience when you attended the Emergency Department recently. It is good to hear of the care and kindness you experience at a time when you were feeling very unwell and understandable anxious. Unfortunately our waiting times can be longer than we would like for some people but we do have a robust system in place to prioritise the sickest first and we use every space we have to do that. I will share your kind comments with the staff who will appreciate them very much.

Good to hear you are feeling much better and best wishes from us all.

Jenny
