"Blatant ignorance to rules"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Outpatients

(as a service user),

Attended outpatient appointment at University hospital Wishaw. Parking attendant constantly marching up to people at the main entrance drop off/pick up area to ensure they are not parking. Impressive I thought, ensuring drivers obey the rules. Pity the same can’t be said for the smoking rules! Both right outside the doors and every bench around the entrance and exit doors were full of people smoking, both patients in nightwear and the general public. The air was so thick with the smell, you had to hold your breath to walk out. Not very pleasant or acceptable. Surely if the management are so keen to make people obey the parking rules then why are they not ensuring the smoking rules laid down by the government for the health of the public, are not obeyed! Why are these rules clearly displayed with massive signs in the immediate vicinity but not policed by anyone? I await your response with much interest.

Hi Stolenair

Firstly thank you for getting in touch regarding this issue, as you will be aware this is a longstanding problem, unfortunately we have limited deterrents other than asking people to extinguish there cigarette or move away from the area, if they do not comply we have no other authority to enforce.

The two entrance parking attendants were established due to issues with FirstBus being unable to turn at the turning point due to parked cars on the roundabout as well as Patient Transport being unable to get patients to the drop off point, this has worked, but as you will appreciate not without some violence and aggression being shown towards them and to ask these to also try to control the smokers would be unfair.

Security do approach smokers during their patrols and request people to move away from the building or extinguish their cigarette, I will remind the Security team again today of the importance of these patrols.

Kind regards

Andrew
