"My child's surgery experience"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Day Case Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was admitted for a minor surgical procedure at RACH Day Case Unit. The staff were fantastic. Nurses and HCSW were so caring and attentive which helped me to feel at ease at quite an anxious time.

Our anaesthetist, Nicola, was lovely. I really appreciated how she explained what would happen to my child, so they knew what to expect.

We had some concerns following the surgery and the surgeon (I didn't catch her name) was excellent. She returned a few times to check us over and did a great job of making the experience fun and playful for my child.

The FY1 doctor that examined my child was also very thorough, with a friendly bedside manner which we really appreciated as we were quite worried. I could see that he wasn't happy with our situation and obviously went to seek further advice, which was reassuring. All in all I felt like the team were very thorough, very caring, and listened to us.

My one suggestion for improvement was that during the pre-surgery consultation first thing in the morning, my child (nor me as the parent) was not asked for consent to examine the surgical site. This is something that is hugely important to us as parents and this isn't the first time this has happened at RACH. A pen was used to make marks on my child's skin but not explained why the marks were being made, what it means etc. I had a fair idea as a parent however I think it's important that healthcare staff explain as much as possible to the child - they understand far more than we think.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. I am delighted you had such a good experience during your short stay in RACH. If you are happy to share your child's name with me by e-mail (sue.danby@nhs.scot) I can ensure all those directly involved in their care get this feedback.Thank you also for your improvement suggestion regarding giving an explanation about surgical site marking. The staff really appreciate getting feedback so thank you so much for taking the time to leave your comments

Kind Regards

Sue Danby
