"Morning after pill"

About: Barnstaple Health Centre / Barnstaple Sexual Health

(as the patient),

I was warmly welcomed into the health centre, and again when i found where i needed to go. I was asked and checked if my details were correct and asked to wait in the waiting room after giving a urine sample. I didn't have to wait long and was taken through to see the Doctor. Lottie was great, friendly but professional at all times. I was very comfortable and it was very easy to explain my situation, a mishap on condom breakage and to be safe would like to take the morning after as an added precaution.

I was asked questions which i was comfortable to answer and was not made to feel awkward or embarrassed, Dr Lottie was genuine in her concern to help and advised me about the morning after pill and which was best based on my situation and what to expect including any side effects i may get.

I'm not currently using any form of contraceptive since having my children, i used the contraceptive pill before children as i suffer from irregular periods (ranging from 3 days to 2 weeks) i did try to take the mini pill after my second child, which turned out badly with lots of bleeding, i was advised that this can be common side effect especially if it's taken irregular and having 2 small children meant i did do this and so suffered. From what i was then told regarding additional dosage to help control the bleeding persuaded me to give it another try. I was also advised on how and when i should take the pill should i miss one, including when i would be covered again when i start taking again.

I liked how i was given options with no pressure, i was also shown coils which have always freaked me out, i was explained how they are used and the differences between them which was so helpful. Realising these have up to 5 years before needing to be replaced makes them sound very appealing now as i wouldn't have to worry about remembering. I also suffer with cysts on my ovaries which are being investigated if it's PCOS, so until i have my ultrasound to see whether a coil is suitable i am giving the mini pill another go and may change to the coil if given the all clear.

I have only come to these decisions based on having had such informative information given to me and feeling i can do this even if i experience problems they are there to help me through. The whole team were very supportive and you're not made to feel bad at all, my overall experience visiting and the help i got was excellent, i honestly can not fault them as they have made me feel more confident that i'm not the only one who's experienced mishaps, issues with contraception and uncertainty choosing what's right for me.
