"Poor staff attitude"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Neurophysiology

(as a service user),

Visited the Neurophysiology Department, on arrival I reported to reception to be met with the member of staff on reception eating at the desk with food around their mouth. I had to wait for them to finish what they were eating.

I explained I had an appointment booked, they then gave me the most incredulous look as to why I hadn’t volunteered my name, asked me personal questions, then told me to go to the waiting area. No welcome to the department , no smile and dealt with abruptly.  The reception is situated in a corridor, people walking past and in the waiting area can hear all your personal information, there is little regard for your privacy.

After waiting nearly 30 minutes past my appointment time, I asked the member of staff on reception what was causing the delay. I was the only patient in the waiting room. They picked up the phone and said I’ll give them a call, their response - they are engaged I’ll have to walk down to the department, go back and sit down, I’ll get back to you.  They never walked down, and they never got back to me.

I feel that this member of staff should be more welcoming, not to eat at reception, be a bit more motivated, and provide privacy around the reception area.

Dear Ricekrispie

Thank you for your feedback and apologies for the delay in responding.

I would like to offer my apologies for the poor welcome you received from the receptionist. We have taken this feedback on board and discussed with the receptionist the importance of first impressions and ensuring they are always polite, friendly and not eating at the reception desk. This will be regularly monitored to ensure standards are met.

If you would like to discuss anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01392 404507.

Marie Hunkin
