"My husband"

About: Rutherglen & Cambuslang Locality Support Service / ICST (Community Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy) Rutherglen & Cambuslang University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a carer),

My husband has a brain tumour Grade 4 Glioblastoma. He was diagnosed nearly 8 years ago and underwent surgery to remove 90 percent of the tumour followed by chemo and radiotherapy. His life expectancy was 1 year to 18 months. He is still with us today and thankfully all stable. He fractured his left hip 18 months ago and has a weakness in his leg and walks with a stick.

However, 5 weeks ago he fell getting out of the car on our driveway and broke his right hip. Our experience of Wishaw University Hospital was dreadful, receiving very little physio and not being encouraged by staff to get up and walk to the toilet but instead being given bottles to urinate in as it was quicker. As a result my husband was discharged to single level living in the upstairs of our house as he could not manage stairs and was mobilising with a zimmer frame. He was a patient got 4 weeks and now has muscle weakness due to lack of appropriate rehab with physios. I feel that they looked at my husband’s diagnosis and not the determined man that he is.

Upon discharge he was referred to the Cambuslang and Rutherglen ICST That was a week and a half ago and he has been working with Andrew the Physio and Sam his Assistant. The difference in service my husband has received is immeasurable in comparison to Wishaw. He sees Andrew and Sam twice per week. They are amazing!!!!  My husband is so much stronger and mobilising so much better. They have been working him on the stairs and confident he will be downstairs next week. The next goal is off the zimmer and onto crutches.

Andrew and Sam arrange times with us that suits us all. They have brought the sunshine back to my husband’s life as he has renewed determination and desperate to meet the challenges they pose him with the strengthening exercises. I cannot praise them enough and have full confidence that they will ensure that my husband meets his goals to be walking independently with confidence. They are professional exceptional physios and most of all care about their patients. They see the person and truly want to make things better and their confidence transcends to their patients.

Our journey is not complete but we have full confidence that we are in safe caring hands of Andrew and Sam. Can’t thank you both enough. We so appreciate you 👏👏👏

Dear Clivedx25,

Thank you so much for sharing your heartfelt feedback on Care Opinion. I am deeply moved by your husband's journey and the challenges he has faced. It is truly inspiring to hear about his determination and resilience.

I am sorry to hear about the disappointing experience at Wishaw University Hospital. It is extremely important to see the person rather than the diagnosis. Your feedback is one way to help us improve all our services.

I am delighted to hear that the experience with ICST Cambuslang and Rutherglen has been positive. I happily agree that Andrew and Sam are exceptional professionals who are dedicated to our patients' well-being. Their commitment to providing personalised care and their ability to inspire and motivate is definitely commendable. It is wonderful to know that progress is being made and that your Husband is on his way to achieving his goals.

Your kind words about Andrew and Sam's impact on recovery are greatly appreciated. They truly embody the values of our team, and we are proud to have them as part of our service.

Thank you once again for your feedback. It means a lot to us and reinforces our commitment to providing compassionate and effective care to all our patients. Best of luck as you continue with the rehabiltation journey.

Warm regards,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your husbands story. I'm sorry to hear that his time in hospital did not feel as positive as you both would have hoped for and appreciate you raising this. It is very important to us, to learn and reflect on all parts of a patient journey and experiences to ensure we learn from this and work together to improve.

I am really happy to hear that the community Physiotherapy team, have had such a positive impact. Your words about them seeing the person and not just the diagnosis reflects exactly what we aim for in our care. It is really great to hear that their support has renewed your husbands determination and helped him stay focused on what is important to him.

I wish him the very best as he moves forward in his rehabilitation journey towards his goal of walking independently and I know it will mean so much to both Sam and Andrew that they have his trust and confidence as they continue to work together.

Thank You

Nicola
