I recently attended the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital A&E for pelvic pain. I'd been having pelvic pain for over a week to a degree that I had never had it before; even though I have the condition PCOS, and it was also unrelated to being on my menstrual period, so I was unnerved by what could be the cause of it. I was seen by Doctor Calvert, who treated me with care, understanding and kindness throughout all my time spent in A&E.
I have an issue with being in-between the differing systems of NHS England and NHS Scotland meaning I can't currently go through a regular GP referral to outpatient services, this complicated things from the doctors' side as the norm would have been discharge to care of GP to then organise an urgent referral scan at the emergency gynaecology department in the QEU but that wasn't possible. Dr Calvert fought my case with her co-doctor and the admin team to secure me an emergency appointment within seven days (this is the maximum time frame they guarantee to see a patient in, it likely could have been sooner but it was a bank holiday weekend).
At my appointment they discovered I have a 3 centimetre cyst on my right ovary which is causing the pain (they said this cyst is separate from anything related to my PCOS) meaning they want to monitor me and rescan me in 4-6 months to see if it has shrunk or grown, and depending on what its doing then I might be looking at having treatment and/or a diagnosis of Endometriosis.
I am also thankful to the two Doctors and Nurse that I saw in Ward 49 for the scan - where I was treated well and listened to there too. Had Dr Calvert not listened to my upset and unusual situation so empathetically, I would still not know I had this cyst or potential additional gynaecological condition. I am very grateful, and I feel QEU is lucky to have a member of staff like Doctor Calvert - thank you so much!
