I went for my 40-week scan in Shetland and was told the fluid around my baby was less than they'd like at this stage and told us we were going to Aberdeen on the last flight that night to begin the induction process the next day.
AMH phoned me at 8am on the Thursday and we headed in for 4pm to get the balloon inserted. It took 2 lovely Hannahs and a speculum to get it in and what a fun we had during the process, they couldn't have been any better with me and made me feel completely at ease the whole time.
I then headed back to the apartment to allow it time to work. I got called to go in on Friday afternoon, but soon after received another call saying there had been an emergency and they would be in touch when they were ready. I went back to triage that night and had the balloon removed by a lovely lady (I can't remember her name) who again had great crack with me and made me feel totally at ease.
I phoned on Sunday morning as I hadn't heard anything and was told it would probably be Monday before they could get me in and I was 2nd on the list. About an hour later I received a call to say I was to go in, so we headed up where they took me into the labour ward.
The 2 midwives on shift was Kera and Nicole and they were absolutely brilliant, they were so lovely with us and made me feel so at ease even though my blood pressure was high and the baby's heart rate was the same. Kera had a look and could tell me I was at 1cm, which was what I was at before the balloon, which was really disappointing.
We then had a discussion about breaking my waters and they got someone else to come and speak to me and said they didn't really want to break them and would like to go down the pessary route before they broke my waters, which was what I agreed would be the best option. They then left the room to speak with triage about getting the pessary in.
My parents then came in and knew there was something on my mind. In that short space of time I'd thought about the next step of induction and what if that failed and the waters being broken didn't speed up the dilation, how long would it take until the baby was ready to come out and what if the fluid ran out and she was in danger? I decided in that moment that I would like to have a planned C-section rather than put her in any danger.
The midwives came back and I told them what I'd decided and they were utterly brilliant and got a doctor called Tara to come and counsel me on a C-section, she was also lovely and made me feel at ease. I signed the paperwork and they put me on a ward as the section was planned for some time the next day.
I had a lovely stay in the hospital that night. Alex the anaesthetist was up to see me bright and early that morning and explained to me the process and what will happen and when, which again put me completely at ease with the whole idea of a C-section, as I did have a massive fear of the epidural and being numb, but I was doing what was best for my baby.
The midwives came and took us down to theatre at 7.45pm and to say I could not have had a more positive experience would be an understatement. Everyone in that theatre were absolutely wonderful, they kept myself and my mam firmly in the loop at each stage and all my fears soon disappeared and within 15 minutes my baby lass had arrived and in my arms. The staff even took my phone and took loads of pictures of that precious time, which was so kind of them to do as my mam wasn't able to with her emotions so for that we will never be able to thank them!
Having a C-section was one of the most positive experiences I have ever had in my life, and I would not have had my daughter any other way now I look back and think on it. The staff in recovery were excellent and the midwives on the ward were excellent too and couldn't have done more for me even though they were extremely busy. It was lovely to see Fiona on shift too, as she had been at my 38 week ETG in Shetland and she got to meet my baby lass before I went home.
I will never be able to thank each and every member of staff for their care and support I received during my time in the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. You are all worth your weight in gold and I could not have been in a better place having my baby lass. Thank you so very much for everything you did for us, you all have a special place in our hearts.
