After chemotherapy, I was referred to OT for hand therapy due to changes caused by neuropathy, medication and complications of existing osteoarthritis. What I wasn’t prepared for was a holistic service that has explored my total mental and physical wellbeing, a service that has examined the ongoing implications of life affected by this ‘new normal’. Sarah, my Occupational Therapist, is part of the GP practice provision. I was referred to her after a brief GP consultation indicated tgat this might be beneficial. The OT service offered has been exceptional and has literally brought me to tears several times due to the time taken by Sarah to actually hear my concerns and consider adaptations specifically for my personal requirements. In addition, I have felt truly heard in relation to my mental struggle in coming to terms with the lack of hand function and the impact this will have on life going forward. Sarah has been patient, kind, empathetic and professional at all times. This is a valuable service that should be offered in more GP practices. The accessibility of the service is key to success. The program offered for me, comprised of exercise, splints, pain management and life adjustments that will be necessary to maintain independence. I am grateful to have a encountered a consummate professional who excels in her career .
