I had my first Mirena coil fitted over a decade ago and I experienced cervical shock immediately after the procedure. After 18 months I had it removed as I didn’t get on with it.
Now, in perimenopause, I decided to try it again, and came to have one fitted.
The nursing staff were amazing. I cannot thank them all enough. The pre-consultation was thorough. I felt listened to and reassured. The nurse who fitted the coil did it with so much care, explained everything as she worked and carried out the procedure as quickly as she could so I didn’t experience the pain for too long.
I experienced cervical shock again about 10 minutes after as I sat in the waiting room. I was given a room to rest in and recover and the nursing staff were with me the whole time. A doctor also came to give me a check up. I was given pain medication, a cup of tea and biscuits, and once the pain had stopped I left. I didn’t feel rushed in any way, which was comforting.
For me it was a very painful procedure but it was quick and not everyone reacts like me. I was in very safe, caring, competent hands. And I am glad I went through with it. And the best bit? I won’t need to think about it again for another 5 years!
