My son was admitted to Ward 17 for a shoulder surgery as a day case. It was his first surgical procedure.
We were greeted by the Charge Nurse Brian who immediately made my son feel at ease. He was treated with respect, compassion and dignity.
He was then seen by the anaesthetic team and surgical team who explained the procedure thoroughly going over all the risks involved but again making my son and myself feel at ease but completely informed.
The theatre staff arrived to take him to surgery and again were friendly, polite and informative.
I was advised my son would get a side room on return from his surgery and I was welcome to wait in it. Unfortunately he had some post operative issues which kept him in recovery longer than anticipated. Brian and his team kept me informed at every opportunity with words of support (and cups of tea).
On return to the ward the recovery nurse explained everything to me to alleviate my anxieties.
My son was well cared for in this post operative period in a welcoming, friendly, peaceful environment. He was seen by the surgical team and physiotherapist before discharge home.
He received his medication, sick note and discharge letter in a timely fashion with clear post operative instructions.
We were then helped out to the car as he was still feeling a little wobbly.
Thank you Charge Nurse Brian and your amazing team and the anaesthetic team and surgical/theatre teams. It was a very positive experience for myself and my son on what was a really stressful day. Your kindness, care and compassion made all the difference.
