"A patient in pain should never have to beg for help"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Day Surgery Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Recently I was left with no choice but to sign myself out of Crosshouse hospital in severe agonising pain and not being listened to.

Firstly I attended A&E after I had experienced a "pop" sensation in my back followed with immediate pain which led to me almost passing out and completely unable to walk as I couldn't put weight on my left side. Ayr transferred me by ambulance to Crosshouse hospital as I had to be seen by Orthopaedic surgeons and they said I'd also require another MRI.

Upon arriving in the day surgery dept I was seen by a consultant who diagnosed sciatica. I explained this wasn't the case as I've had sciatica since having my first child almost 30 years ago. They insisted it was sciatica without any exam or scans. They suggested the physio come to aid me. The physio tried patiently to get me on my feet and all that happened was me left in excruciating pain and crying. I was then moved to ward 2b and given pain relief all night and helped to use the toilet by commode. Not once was I able to stand myself or sit myself down as my left leg had to be lifted on and off the bed for me.

In the morning a consultant seen me again and said because the pain was still no better they would increase pain relief and see how things went for the next few days. 2 physiotherapists then showed up and said they wanted me to stand and use the walker. Myself and my wife both explained I couldn't do this but they were adamant I had to and one was rude to me in response. I then said I would like to sign myself out while being in a hysterical state.

A doctor then came to speak to me and told me my scans show nothing and I had been examined. None of this happened, there were no exams and no scans. My bowels hadn't moved in over 3 days and I had barely been able to pee, I'd struggled and had to push to get any out. Still I was not at all listened to and the doctor gave my wife the form to sign me out. They asked why I felt I wasn't being listened to and I explained I know my body and my pain. I've suffered chronic illnesses for years so I know when a pain is new and different. I begged with them to listen to me and told them I know something is wrong. But they did not seem to care, simply told me to go home then.

A patient in pain should never have to beg for help. I was unable to walk and in the worst pain of my life and yet no one cared. I do intend to now save money to pay for a private scan and will be taking things further when I'm proven right. I also found a lump down below which was bleeding during my shower and my wife was concerned about this. That wasn't checked either. My wife was present throughout all of this.

The nurses who cared for me were nothing short of amazing and apologised to me as I was leaving in a state. This was the doctor and physio who made me feel like this.

Dear Woodpigeonh53,

I am so sorry to hear of your experience whilst recieving care at Univeristy Hospital Crosshouse (UHC). It is clear from the information you have provided that you did not feel listened to, which is so disappointing and does not represent our values as NHS Ayrshire and Arran. If you are still experiencing symptoms, I would encourage you to go to your GP and get this investigated if possible.

Unfortunately I can not look into the details of your concerns as Care Opinion is an anonymous platform, however if you would like your concerns investigated, please contact complaintsteam@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

Thank you for the kind words you shared regarding the nursing staff in ward 2B. I will share this with the team.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,

Stevie

Thank you for responding to my lost. I have in fact emailed that email address twice now as this continued on after I spoke with my gp and she rang the orthopaedic ward who refused to take me back. For almost a week I was left pleading with GPs and nhs24 to help me and I kept being fobbed off. 2 days ago a different GP in my practice prescribed 2 new painkillers and yesterday was the first day in 9 days I got any relief at all. I'm left now not trusting Crosshouse hospital for the second time in my life which is a really sad. I stand by my opinion of all nurses in Ayr and Crosshouse who dealt with me over this time. They don't get enough credit for the amazing job they do and I thank them greatly for how they treated me
