"Excellent care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My son recently had a sudden onset of croup. It was restricting his breathing, which was terrifying, so I quickly took him down to A&E.

The place was overrun. I checked him in and no more than 5 minutes of being in the children's waiting area, a nurse came in and asked which child was making the classic barking cough noise.

He was immediately taken into triage, checked and given a dose of steroids which were effective. After this we waited in the waiting area to been seen by the doctor prior to being discharged. During that time a senior nurse spoke with everyone in the department and explained the pressures on the service. I found this very emotional as my heart went out to all the staff in the department and hospital trying their best to cope with the demand.

We were then seen by a doctor who spoke with my son and explained to him what croup was. He was so engaging with my son and is a total credit to his profession.

I can't thank everyone in the department enough for the quick and effective care they gave my son.

Dear craterse65,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear that your son took unwell with croup, as a parent I understand how frightening this can be. I am delighted to hear that he was seen and treated efficiently before waiting to see the doctor. I am glad the steroids worked quickly. We appreciate your support with our message that the senior nurse told everyone, it is an exceptionally busy time and our staff are under a lot of pressure but still want to do their best for each and every patient.

I will ensure you thanks and praise are passed on to the teams who I am sure will get a real boost in hearing this.

I hope your son is feeling better now.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
