"Most of my experiences have been positive"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Clinical Oncology

(as a service user),

It's been a very hard few months but hopefully I will come out the other end and back to my normal self, most of my experiences have been positive.  I have found it difficult to assert myself and struggled with the emotional roller coaster.  I've found it much more difficult as I near the end of my treatment with the not knowing what to do , not knowing what is causing some of the aches and pains. I don't feel I can phone the nurses as I'm sure they will get fed up if phoned too often. I'm quite low but not sure how to deal with this.

Dear VARob,

My name is Murdina MacDonald and I am the Lead Cancer Nurse at NHS Fife. Thank you for sharing how things have been. I can only imagine how much strength it’s taken to keep going through such a difficult few months. What you’ve described the emotional ups and downs, the uncertainty, the aches and pains that raise questions all of that is completely understandable, and you are certainly not alone in feeling this way.

Coming to the end of treatment can be one of the most challenging times. When the appointments become fewer and things quiet down, the emotional impact often becomes louder. It’s not a sign of weakness to feel low or uncertain it’s a deeply human response to a life-altering experience.

Please do not hesitate to contact the nursing team. You are never a burden. These services are here for you. Reaching out is not a sign of bothering anyone; it’s an act of self-respect, and of honouring everything you’ve been through.

Do you have a Cancer Clinical Nurse specialist you've been in contact with, if not I'd be happy to help connect you with the right person. my email address is murdina.macdonald@nhs.scot

You might also find it helpful to connect with Maggie’s. They offer a calm, welcoming space to talk things through with someone who understands, whether that’s about low mood, worries about the future, or simply making sense of what comes next. You don’t need a referral, and you can just drop in whenever it feels right for you.

You deserve to be supported with the same compassion and care at this stage of your journey as you were during the more visible parts of treatment. And you will find your way through this, step by step not back to the way things were, but forward into something new, shaped by your strength and the support you receive.

Warm Wishes

Murdina
