"Serious delays"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Radiology (X-rays and Scans)

(as the patient),

Admitted to A&E in October 2024, told chest X-ray was clear, 14 weeks later received call from GP telling me not to panic but they had just received report from ARI to go for follow-up X-ray as wanted to check if something seen on lungs had resolved.

At 16 weeks following A&E admission, I received the follow-up X-ray, radiographer said I’d fallen through the cracks! Results within 3 days and then had to wait 2 weeks to discuss with GP, I have partially collapsed lung tissue possibly permanent lung scarring so to treat it the GP said first I need to have a CT scan of my chest.

Had scan 2 weeks later, nearly six weeks ago and still no results. I was also told to take sputum sample to CT appointment, which I did, only to be told by radiographer that they don’t receive samples so had to go to GP and hand in.

If this turns out to be something serious, something that requires treatment, then these delays could be serious for me and my family. Next step has to be MP complaint as this should have been reported at first X-ray.

Dear Feduplass,

I’m genuinely sorry you’ve had constant delays with this. This isn’t what we would want for any patient and I can see why it’s left you feeling scared. To make things worse you’ve had a delay with a reply to your feedback too.

I’m not linked to any of the service it would be most helpful for you to get a reply from, I work in the Quality Improvement Team at NHS Grampian and have the job of making sure the feedback shared on Care Opinion reaches the teams it was intended for. Unfortunately, the GP Practices don’t have responding access on Care Opinion, in fact most of the GP Practices in Grampian are independently run and have their own complaints and feedback processes. They won’t see this post with it being shared with them directly. I’m also responding because you might be stuck between the hospital and the GP and I’d like to try to get you some advice on what to do next.

Would you mind getting in touch with me directly? I know this would mean breaking your anonymity, which you might not feel comfortable doing, so it’s completely up to you. I can be contacted on email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or telephone / text: 07885720267.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Kirsten
