I attended A&E at the Royal Alexandra Hospital with my partner and I am traumatised by the scenes that I saw.
Firstly when I arrived there was a person with worsening stroke symptoms in the waiting room with a progressive left sided weakness and when approaching the reception we were told the buzzer wasn’t working and to just bang the door. The door was not being answered so it took a few times of asking reception to get this person help.
My partner was in from for the whole afternoon and my concerns were dismissed by the staff member that saw him, who told me that a blood glucose level for a non diabetic of 9.6 was normal and if he was in a ward it would not be getting checked so it might just sit like that, normal blood glucose level is between 4 and 7. I then asked if an Hba1C would be arranged and they said they would ask the doctor. I then heard myself being spoken about outside the room to other staff.
I asked for sandwich and was met with a dirty look and a sigh and in the end no sandwich was ever brought nor was any water and the heat inside the room was severe.
I heard some staff discussing patients cases so loudly at the desk that I can recall the names of the patients in the department stating that someone was on the spectrum but had capacity - I find this very undignified for the person involved.
The most traumatic thing was a person lying on the floor at the front door saying they couldn’t breathe and when I alerted reception, staff stated they had been like that for a while and that they know. I then said that the patient needed to be seen right away and they were struggling for breath and again was told the staff knew about them.
They were grey in pallor, lips cyanosed, using accessory muscles to breathe and I was so concerned. I stood and waited and then called senior staff to escalate it as I was worried the they had a pulmonary embolism.
The fact I had to call the senior staff through switchboard to get help for them is abhorrent.
I am shocked and disgusted at the treatment given.
I hope these matters will be raised as it could have cost somebody their life.
