"Treated with 0 respect"

About: Carseview Centre / Ward 2

(as a relative),

My partner was an inpatient in ward 2 in Carseview due to a very severe depressive episode, at first he withdrew from wanting support and would not help himself but when he started to ask to see a therapist or psychologist for a session he was not given any, was instead put on medications to treat it. Although medications have helped, would have benefited from further support and therapies.

He did see an OT, who was fantastic with him and helped him gain some confidence in skills in the kitchen. However, he was not treated respectfully by one of the nurses. This nurse was dismissive of my partner's thoughts and concerns, and when my partner had asked to see a doctor was told it’s a Sunday there’s no doctors on call -  however, I work in the healthcare industry and know there is medical staff on call he can and should be able to speak to, so his right to talk to someone higher was taken from him.

It has caused me a lot of upset to see my partner, who is in a vulnerable stage of his life, spoken to like this by the nurse. This then set my partner back in his recovery journey, just when he was near ready for discharge, this had put him back into low moods because of the lack of dignity and respect given during this day.

I think the nurse forgets my partner is a human too, my partner never caused issues and was always pleasant to the staff.

I would not want my partner back in here again for treatment if this is the level of care given by certain staff members.

Hi frostjc93

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your partners experience in our care.

Unfortunately we currently do not have a Psychologist in post. However our nursing and occupational staff are able to deliver psychological interventions. I am sorry that your partner did not receive the support they requested.

If your partner feels they would still benefit from psychological therapy you can seek a referral from their GP or Community Mental Health team.

I will ensure your feedback in relation to our OT and nursing staff is shared with the teams.

I am sorry that the interactions with the nurse were not as we would expect and caused upset.

Medical staff are not routinely available at the weekends, however are available for urgent matters.

If you would like to share further details of your experience, I would welcome the opportunity to investigate your concerns, to do so please contact the NHS Tayside Patient experience team.

Thanks

Danielle Gorrie
