"No beds, but staff deserve so much credit"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a parent/guardian),

My adult son collapsed and was taken to Altnagelvin hospital in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. His blood was going really high then really low and he would faint. The doctors and nurses were absolutely outstanding, however, they were under so much pressure in there and there seemed to be no beds for patients; after 3 days of waiting, we still didn't have a bed, people were sitting in chairs for days.

The doctors and nurses were trying so hard to get around to everyone but clearly they were short staffed and the hospital itself could not deal with the volume of patients. The staff deserve so much credit for all their hard work but they need more staff and a bigger hospital. I cannot thank them enough for their care.

Dear castorbd89

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your experience of you and your sons visit to the Emergency Department. My name is Amy and my sincere apologies for the late reply to your story and for the long wait faced during your sons time in the Dept.

I was delighted to read that you felt the staff were outstanding and that stood out for you during you and your sons long wait for a bed. I have shared this with the staff who really appreciate the kind words they receive. It makes it all worth while. We are extremely busy and have been for some time now as we prioritise and attend to patients who need our care and treatment. It gives us great satisfaction to help and care for people when they need us. I fully appreciate that it can be frustrating when beds are not available, please be assured that we are daily aware of this and continue to do our best to get patients seen and treated to the best of our ability liaising with senior managers regarding admissions.

I noticed under Improvement you mentioned cleaners, it is unclear if you found cleanliness an area for improvement or relating to staff. I have liaised with domestic support staff and continue to do so when cleanliness mater arise to ensure staff are aware of the importance of cleanliness and keeping areas cleaned and well maintained

I hope your son is recovering well

kind regards

Amy
