First of all I fell & hurt my leg, but I have a complex medical history. Once the staff in minor injuries found out one of my conditions which can be rather scary for myself & others, they decided to get me in from the ambulance rather than having me waiting in the ambulance & triggering this condition. They hadn't heard of it before as it's rare so they did their research on it before I was brought into the unit.
A staff member settled me on the bed & another staff member took all my notes then examined me. I was sent for an xray & luckily I had only done soft tissue damage so was referred to physio at home. I was well looked after, given all my other medication & pain relief for my leg. Due to my other health issues my mobility is poor, hence the reason of me falling in the first place so I had to get patient transport home. I sadly missed the cut off for getting transport on that night.
I sat watching the staff treat other patients & was in awe of how they made the youngest of children who were clearly scared feel safe enough to let them examine them. I even sat while one of them had a patient who couldn't speak English so she communicated with the help of his friend who spoke very little English & the use of her phone to translate.....never in a million years would I have taken that into account that a staff member would sometimes have to communicate with a patient that couldn't speak English very well.
The whole time I was there I was checked on regularly as I never got picked up by patient transport till 9am. I was made to feel safe & at ease by the staff in the ambulatory care unit who were looking after me.
There was a girl who was a volunteer who came round in the evening to chat with me, she chatted for over 30 minutes (no awkward silences). I've never seen these volunteers before but she was surely a credit to the staff. I think since she was talking to me & I was happy chatting away to her about all things in general the nurses didn't feel as bad that I was just waiting.
So a massive thank you to all the staff I met for looking after me that day till 9pm then the ambulatory care staff for checking in on me throughout the night.
Staff like these deserve praise!
The Minor Injuries Unit was very bright, looked as if it had just been all done up or even opened up. Very spacious & very clean.
ABC were meant to come & get me, it was said I was ready to go home at 5:50pm, but it took till 9am for them to send out a patient transport vehicle.
"I was made to feel safe and at ease"
