After hours of my dad lying on a trolley in casualty in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, he was moved into the emergency department. No words were spoken to him as he was left at nurses station.
Nurse proceeded to take his observations, and no words spoken to him. No introduction or explanation until the nurse returned with oxygen and said that he needed it.
Hours went by, then he was moved into a cubicle. I gave my dad water and some snacks, but had to ask for a sandwich after 6 hours. The lack of communication and no attempt to reassure a patient in their 80s with breathing problems was appalling.
As a nurse myself, I feel that staff are forgetting basic principles of care and that they have a professional code to abide by. Another nurse was very abrupt to my mother who has cognitive decline.
My dad was moved to a mixed set ward which was not ideal and dignity was lost with other patients, who were unable to keep bedclothes on and not enough staff to assist.
Just wanted to feedback as staff should reflect on how their behaviour lets down our struggling, but once good NHS.
