"Right knee issues"

About: Barnet Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have arthritis in my right knee, to the extent of it putting me on crutches a few times a year.  I am active, in my 60s, and an finding this process debilitating.

Both of my hips were successfully replaced. It seems that my right knee is not sufficiently damaged to do a replacement, so I've been offered a steroid injection. I have had these before and they don't last too long.

The Physio I saw recently looked at the abnormalities of my patella and I have exercises which I am doing. We both agreed and I had a discussion with the registrar about a potential replacement.

I was told by a senior member of staff via messages between consulting rooms and only viewing my x-ray that I am too young and they will consider this at 75. I am young enough to recover, heal and get my knee and leg working properly again, I am not a saving to be made for the NHS - and I am sorry that is how I feel!

I have gone around in 6 week cycles of visits, x-rays and an MRI and the episodes I am having are becoming more severe and take longer to recover from! One very unhappy patient! My experiences with both hip replacements were so much better! Surely you can do better than this?

Dear Barry,

We're very sorry to hear you're having on-going issues with arthritis in your right knee and have been advised that a knee replacement is not the recommended course of action at this point. We are unable to comment on medical decisions but if you would like to discuss your experience with the orthopaedic team further, could we please ask you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) if you haven't already done so. PALS can be contacted by email at rf-tr.bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. Sending you our best wishes, the Barnet patient experience team.
