I visited with my husband for a day procedure. I am a nurse, and as such noticed the way in which nurses on this ward interacted with the team and patients/relatives. All of the nurses were great communicators keeping patients informed of the procedures being followed.
I witnessed one nurse apologise for something and a senior nurse turned this conversation around into a supportive and reflective chat, which I could see strengthened the nurse's confidence for the future. I could hear nurses explaining to some patients the possibility of their procedure being cancelled and this was imparted in a sympathetic manner which makes all the difference when kindness and compassion is shown to Patients.
I noted the Deputy Charge nurse, Gary, taking time, introducing new students to the ward in a kind and considered way to ensure they were orientated and made to feel welcome. I also observed Gary carrying out a teaching session for a procedure my husband was having, he was extremely professional and supportive.
Later as I sat in my husband’s room I could hear Gary leading the team, and I was very impressed by his leadership, which was exemplary. Staff knew what they were doing and there was a real culture of learning and a focus on ensuring great Patient care.
If every ward operated like ward 44 the Western Trust would be a great place to work and staff should go home each day feeling they’ve made a massive difference to people’s lives.
