"Nursing care"

About: Cardiology / Ward 44

(as a relative),

I visited with my husband for a day procedure. I am a nurse, and as such noticed the way in which nurses on this ward interacted with the team and patients/relatives. All of the nurses were great communicators keeping patients informed of the procedures being followed.

I witnessed one nurse apologise for something and a senior nurse turned this conversation around into a supportive and reflective chat, which I could see strengthened the nurse's confidence for the future. I could hear nurses explaining to some patients the possibility of their procedure being cancelled and this was imparted in a sympathetic manner which makes all the difference when kindness and compassion is shown to Patients.

I noted the Deputy Charge nurse, Gary, taking time, introducing new students to the ward in a kind and considered way to ensure they were orientated and made to feel welcome. I also observed Gary carrying out a teaching session for a procedure my husband was having, he was extremely professional and supportive.

Later as I sat in my husband’s room I could hear Gary leading the team, and I was very impressed by his leadership, which was exemplary. Staff knew what they were doing and there was a real culture of learning and a focus on ensuring great Patient care.

If every ward operated like ward 44 the Western Trust would be a great place to work and staff should go home each day feeling they’ve made a massive difference to people’s lives.

Hi Blessed1719,

My name is Chris. I am the Charge Nurse for Cardiology Ward 44/CCU at Altnagelvin Hospital. I want to thank you for taking the time to post about your recent experience of our service. As a team we have targeted ensuring that all the staff feel they are able to work and develop in a productive and positive manner so I am very happy to hear you experienced this in practice. I believe that interaction of this nature between staff and between staff and patient's/relatives underlines and emphasises the positive approach we have in cardiology, despite the pace and demand of the work, to ensuring safe and informed care.

I have shared your post with the wider staff and will feedback to Gary on the impact he has had.

I hope your husband is well recovered from his procedure.

Wishing you both the very best,

Chris
