"Breast Cancer"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Breast Clinic University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

After a recall from routine breast screening, I had biopsies taken. Got results in about 10 days to say I had breast cancer. Very grateful that the screening picked this up, I had no signs or symptoms. Very quickly I had an appointment with the Consultant, Doctor McMorrow and met a Breast care Nurse called Ashley. They were both great. I needed a lumpectomy and 2 lymph nodes removed. I was available at short notice and I had surgery carried out in a few weeks. All the staff looked after me so well.

Got results in a couple of weeks and 1 lymph node was clear but the other wasn't. The tumour they found was alot bigger than they thought from the scan. There was also cancer on the marker area around where the tumour had been. Next was a CT scan and thankfully the cancer hasn't spread, good news. Yesterday I had breast reduction on both breasts. Hopefully all last traces have been removed and I'm on to treatment after this.

I want to say a huge thank you to both Consultants that worked on me. Ms McMorrow & Ms McIlhinney. They took the time to explain everything clearly to me and checked how I was, before I was discharged. My anesthetist Lindsay, Olly and Hannah. They put me at ease and checked on me later as well. My nurses Elsbeth and later on in the day Susan and also Tracy who I remembered from my last visit. This has been a shock to me and I can't thank all the staff enough for taking great care of me.

Hi leojs93

many thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with us, we really do appreciate this. Your experience highlights the importance and value of breast screening but at the same time with it the shock of the results and necessary treatment. However, your shared experience shows the importance from your perspective of timely care, clear explanations, being put at ease and continuity of care.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences and for this positive feedback. I will ensure that your feedback is shared with all the staff involved.

I wish you well for the next stages of your treatment and care.

take care

Mhairi
