I recently attended an appointment at Musgrave Outpatients Department for an ultrasound-guided biopsy from a nerve sheath tumour. As with a biopsy, there was a degree of anxiety.
I was shown into a cubicle by a lovely woman called Cathy, a support worker. She advised me regarding preparing for the procedure and where to go once ready. The radiologist, Ronan (I hope that’s right), introduced himself and gave an explanation of what he would be doing during the procedure. Both he and Cathy helped put me at ease by making general conversation, both being very pleasant and easy to talk to. My dignity was maintained at all times.
I was prepared for the local anaesthetic after Ronan had checked where he needed to inject using the ultrasound. He kept me informed at all times and offered plenty of reassurance. Cathy was brilliant, trying to keep me distracted and engaged in conversation. I really didn’t feel anything when the anaesthetic was being administered.
The actual biopsy was a totally different story. I don’t think it would have mattered how prepared I was for this—it was extremely painful, putting it mildly. Cathy and Ronan responded straight away, offering reassurance and checking on me. Ideally, I should have had two or three biopsies taken; however, Ronan understood that I couldn’t put myself through that again and reassured me that he had obtained a good sample.
I was given a glass of water and again asked if I was okay. Ronan explained the timeframe for me obtaining my results. Once dressed, I left and headed for the door. On leaving the building, Ronan called after me to check I was definitely okay.
Although I found the actual experience of the biopsy very painful, I have to commend the staff. Both Ronan and Cathy were excellent. They were professional, friendly, pleasant, empathetic, and understanding. I couldn’t have let this experience go without acknowledging the staff and the job that they are doing in challenging situations. Keep up the good work.
