"Post operation infection"

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

Due to an accident at work i had to have reconstruction surgery on my right ankle which was done under private healthcare.

10 days later I was due to get my stitches out when we noticed a reddening around the wound. I notified the doctor who said it was fine. So the stitches were removed and a new dressing applied.

2 days later it would all change. I had extreme pain in my foot every time I tried to stand. On inspection of my foot, we found it to be bleeding quite badly from the wound. So my wife called the hospital and they recommended I go to A&E get swabs taken and get onto antibiotics ASAP.

I was admitted to ward 33 where the staff are quite simply exceptional. They could see I was in a lot of pain when I came in, they did everything in their power to make me comfortable and did all they could to help. Nothing was a bother. This continued for the 20 days I was in the hospital. Not once did they waiver in their pursuit to help.

I went through a further 2 theatre procedures each time involving a lot of pain, and had a reaction to the antibiotics which then resulted in me getting a rash all over my body and getting a fever as a result.

I can honestly say that I went to hell and back in my time but the one thing that kept me going throughout was the staff. They deserve a medal for what they have to put up with. For my own sake I do hope this never happens again however I would have full confidence that if it did I would be in the best care possible.

I'll sign off by saying a massive thank you to all the staff at ward 33. Each and everyone of you are now my hero's. Thank you for making my time as pleasant as it ever could be considering the circumstances. I'll never forget you all. Xx
