"World class care"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Maternity care / Labour Suite Maternity care / Maternity Assessment Unit

(as the patient),

Feedback is so often only given in a health care setting when a patient feels they have had a bad experience, or when at times things did not go as planned.

Sometimes we have to conceed that situations are outwith of our control and not everything can follow our expectations. The worse cases of this are people complaining for complaints sake! As a society we are ultra quick to be critical; much slower to react with high praise when the situation calls for it. I think it is important to mark the world class care we received when our son was born yesterday in Ninewells Hospital, and I stress the words world class. I do not stay this lightly. So often I feel the NHS is underappreciated and criticism leieved towards it constantly both politically and otherwise, however I personally believe deeply in the NHS. What a wonderful gift to the people of our proud country, Scotland.

Initially we where seen by the expert hands of Lorna who was kind, caring and did the initial tests and checks required, quickly acting and rushing my partner to the labour ward.

In the Labour Ward my partner and son were looking after by the skill and dedication of your midwife staff. Special mention goes to Greive who showed dedication throughout her long night shift and the other midwives that helped including the midwife that was newr the end of her shift and helped initially. (I am sorry as to forget all of their names, brain fog right now).

After initially a fast start to labour, dilating up to 4cm in the space of a few hours, things began to slow and took a turn for the worse. We had Rebecca check in on us (a fantastic doctor). We took the advice of the brilliant Obstetricians Lauren and Rachel who advised on C-Section likely being the best way forward while baby was not in distress. I sat by my partner as she skillfully and safely brought our son into the world. What a glorious line of work you have; I am sure you already know this. What a privilege it must be to do something so wonderful.

In Ward 38 North you continued the world class care. Obstetrician Subhayu is a lovely man, warm and kind. He is also hilarious! The Registrar working with him today (mid April) is going to learn a great deal. The midwives, other clinicians and nurses on ward 38 are fantastic.

Special mentions to Angela, HCA, she is such a kind and warm individual, Kaitlyn HCA who is a wealth of knowledge and so kind, along with the infant feeding support staff who are lovely.

I have one critical item to mention. The food is absolutely fine; however you do overcook your broccoli. Broccoli should be firmer and have bite to it. If this is the only thing I can say (and I say it jokingly of course) you can appreciate how much we are forever thankful to every member of staff that we saw over the two days.

Please excuse the people I have missed off. I tried to remember everyone by name. If you read this story perhaps you will remember us and I hope it makes you realise that your work is appreciated and your care is superlative. Do not take this as hyperbolic, because it is utterly deserved.

Thank you

Dear SteveR

Thank you for your feedback. It is wonderful to hear such a positive reflection on our maternity service being shared with kindness and humour.

My name is Lee-Anne Abel and I am the senior midwife for the acute maternity inpatient areas.

I can hear from your feedback that you acknowledge and recognise the good work our team are doing every day and I sense very clearly the difference this made for you and your family. I am delighted to hear that you have felt there has been very positive care provided from all staff groups and that the staff who have met with you have quite clearly made a positive impression. This is the type of relationships we strive to promote whilst providing care to families and it is wonderful to hear clear examples of positive relational care have been demonstrated.

Your feedback will be shared across teams to celebrate and acknowledge that the care our teams provide daily is appreciated by those accessing our services. It is so kind of you to take time to share this message, thank you.

Our maternity teams do all feel privileged to work in the setting we do and be part of such special and unique moments with families. It is delightful that you sensed our respect for this and have felt so well cared for.

The voices and experience of those accessing our services is so important in helping us support positive change and recognise good work. Please enjoy the early days of parenthood with your family and cherish the special moments still to come with as much positivity as you have the moments around birth.

Warm Regards,

Lee-Anne Abel

Senior Midwife
