The maternity staff at BGH were second to none. Nothing was too much bother and they went above and beyond to help. A special shout-out to Carly for helping with our labour (you were an absolute star), and to Joice, Joan and Claire for the post-natal feeding and emotional support.
In terms of maternity facilities at Borders General Hospital, I feel these need to be improved. There was only one shared toilet for the whole of the Labour ward. So, for example, mid-labour, I had to walk down the corridor to then wait (mid contraction) for the toilet to become vacant. One of the symptoms in labour is diarrhoea - so to not have en suite toilets in each Labour room is a problem.
The post-natal ward (Ward 16) is also extremely cramped. There’s hardly any room to move about your curtained-off section (which feels dangerous when you’re holding and trying to change/feed a newborn baby for the first time and have no idea what you’re doing!). There’s not enough space and makes for a more stressful environment.
The staff are brill at working with what they’ve got, but I was quite shocked that those were the facilities in 2025 (felt more like 1955).
"Great staff, poor facilities"
