I have been waiting over 5 years for gallbladder surgery, in that time I have been supported by my GP with referrals to the general surgery team with my GP chasing up many times. I have had antibiotics and have to take regular pain relief which has now stopped working and I am having to take painkillers that I don’t really want to take as they are so strong but only thing that helps with pain.
I have had pre op assessments and then no date or further follow up. I was asked to come for a meeting with a staff member and this gave me hope however I was made to feel that I was not important at all and I was told criteria has been changed and because of my weight that they are not willing to give me surgery! Even though this was never even mentioned as an issue up to this point by my GP, pre op team and other hospital staff. I was at the appointment alone and was made to feel so worthless and that me being in daily pain is something I will just need to live with.
The truth is I can’t carry on like this and I am so depressed and feel that I am missing out on life. I was made to feel that I am just an inconvenience and even though I was crying and visibly upset I was shown no compassion and felt spoken down to. All I was offered was a second opinion from one of their colleagues. At the time I said it didn’t matter as I was so upset but I believe that I should not be made to suffer for the rest of my life, whilst I fully understand that people should be made aware of the risks involved in surgery to be told that I was near the top of a waiting list by someone on the phone to being told this I feel like I have been severely let down and to just be told I will never have surgery to rid me of this constant pain has made me so depressed I have been unable to go to work or enjoy life anymore.
GP surgeries get a lot of negativity but my GP surgery has done nothing but their best for me.
